The inspiration for the Viral Chopped Bagel
I remember hearing about the “Chopped Cheese”, a well-known sandwich in New York City (especially the Bodegas and I’m sure other places around the city). The look and sound of a “chopped cheese” is giving = AMAZING! So what is a chopped cheese?
[a Chopped Cheese is] a type of sandwich originating from New York City. Found in bodegas throughout Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, it is made on a grill with ground beef (typically pre-formed ground beef patties), onions, adobo or other seasonings, and cheese, all of which are chopped together on the grill as the meat and onions cook and the cheese melts. It is served with lettuce, tomatoes, and condiments on a hero roll. Read more here.
Then there was the Salmon Chopped Cheese debacle with TikTok food influencer, Keith Lee, whom I adore by the way. Locals encouraged him to try a Salmon Chopped Cheese. On the flip side, other New Yorkers were NOT having it as well as discouraging it. Whispers…I wouldn’t mind trying one.
The Chopped Bagel (Sandwich) that went viral on TikTok uses a similar method of preparation as the Chopped Cheese to create a delicious sandwich whether it be for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
The Chopped Bagel – TikTok Sensation
I kept seeing everyone talk about this viral TikTok Chopped Bagel, so I was like...Okay, I might need to get on this. There are several variations of the viral TikTok chopped bagel, so when I decided to make it, I used one of my favorite types of bacon, cracked black pepper bacon, which I found at my local Aldi. I thought this would be absolutely divine in a chopped bagel. Basically all I did was add my ingredients to a cutting board in somewhat of a mound, toasted my bagel as I was chopping the ingredients, then spread the filling on a bagel to make a sandwich.
With my version of the TikTok Chopped Bagel, I decided to use cracked black pepper bacon, lightly scrambled eggs, chopped green onions, red onions, cheddar cheeses, and of course cream cheese. What I love about this sandwich is you can make it vegan-friendly/dairy-free as well. This particular time I did not but I am planning to make a dairy-free version using dairy non-dairy cream cheese, and my impossible sausage as well as plant eggs.
Ingredients for the TikTok Chopped Bagel – Cracked Pepper Bacon edition:
Cracked Black Pepper Bacon: I love this bacon ever since I had Conecuh bacon made with cracked black pepper. It’s so good and provides the perfect amount of spice.
Green onions: I’m obsessed with green onions, and the punchy flavor adds the perfect bite to the bagel.
Red onion: Raw red onions add crunch, color, and delicious flavor especially combined with green onions.
Cream cheese: The creaminess of cream cheese would act like a spread as well as a binder for the other ingredients.
Cheddar cheese: I prefer using an off the block, four-blend cheddar. This is one of my favorites when cheddar is added to recipes. You can also buy your favorite cheddar and shred it off of the block using a cheese grater.
The Chopped Bagel is such an easy concept and this recipe is no different. All you do is stack all of your ingredients on a cutting board, make sure it’s fully combined, and add it to your bagel. You decide how much you want to go inside of your sandwich.

Storage
Honestly, I think the best way to enjoy this Chopped Bagel is fresh. However, I wanted to see how it would turn out if I made it beforehand. If you don’t mind losing some of the crunch of the bacon, you will definitely love it. The filling stores well in an air-tight container so all you have to do is toast your bagel then add it to your bagel sandwich when ready to enjoy. Honestly, it can be enjoyed cold or warm. Store in airtight container for up to 3 days.
