It’s no secret that Birmingham, Alabama is considered a “Food Mecca”. It’s the home of some of the best food and local eateries. Birmingham also known as The Magic City, undoubtedly serves up some of the best Chicken and Waffles. Below, check out a few of my favorite restaurants and eateries around The Magic City!
Chicken and Waffles from My Pretty Brown Kitchen
For instance, I don’t play when it comes to my not-so-guilty pleasure—fried chicken. A few years ago, after we touched down in New Orleans for the Essence Festival, we found our way to celebrate National Fried Chicken Day. Add a waffle into the mix and we level up.
This is not a recipe post, but I did want to share a few of my favorite places around my hometown (Birmingham, AL) that serve up some of the best Chicken and Waffles.
Chicken & Waffles in the Magic City
Yo Mama’s – If you’re ever in Birmingham, Alabama also known as The Magic City, make sure you plan a visit to Yo’ Mama’s. It exceeded my expectations so, I had to write about my first visit. Also, it’s a black-owned restaurant and the food is made with so much love! The extra-crispy chicken shares space with a perfectly golden, waffle, and their signature house-made syrup is delicately sweet. Be sure to catch Yo’ Mama’s restaurant on the Netflix Series: Fresh, Fried & Crispy (Birmingham). More dEATS here!
Eugene’s Hot Chicken – This Nashville-style Hot Chicken was my first introduction to the Hot Chicken world. Soulful, southern eats from Eugene’s Hot Chicken has been one of my favorites over the years. Eugene’s is a black-owned restaurant that also has a food truck posted up at various locations around the city. For this reason, we love to support it. Seriously, you will be on a scavenger hunt saying to yourself, “Where is Eugene’s?” There is a brick-and-mortar location in the heart of the Uptown District and a new location just opened in Hoover, AL. With this in mind, you can check out the menu and location info here.
Metro Diner – There’s nothing like the combination of crispy, crunchy, and juicy deep-fried chicken that tastes like it came straight from my Mama’s kitchen! The Chicken & Waffles from Metro Diner comes with half a fried chicken and a Belgian Waffle topped with a sweet, house-made strawberry butter. You can read my post and review it here.
Hattie B’s – I wrote a post about Hattie B’s bringing more MAGIC to the City! Read it here.
Exotic Wings & Things — the real ones know!
New Orleans – Honorable Mention
- Daisy Mae’s New Orleans – Southern Fried Chicken & Breakfast – HB and I discovered Daisy Mae’s New Orleans – Southern Fried Chicken & Breakfast on our long walk after the Essence Festival concert. We love their sibling location Daisy Duke’s but they shut down early due to the crowd. I ordered the Chicken & Waffles, but I really wanted Chicken & Pancakes because they have the most ginormous pancakes that taste oh. so. good! I was happy with my decision.
My Pretty Brown Kitchen
Chicken & Waffles from My Pretty Brown Kitchen is like no other. One Sunday we decided to whip up some delicious chicken & waffles which we tend to do from time to time. Fried to perfection in my Mom’s Dutch oven. A simple buttery waffle with a hot and spicy syrup. Made with love! We haven’t shared a recipe for our chicken yet. Should we?
