Strawberry Butter Golden Dump Cake is one of the easiest desserts you’ll ever make. Fresh strawberries baked to perfection with a buttery, golden topping.

I love a good dessert recipe that requires minimal steps. It is my understanding that Dump Cakes go back as far as the early 1980s, but it could have been before then. By the way, I didn’t name it either. I also decided to look in one of my old school cookbooks to see if they had Dump Cake recipes, and you won’t believe…it did! Who knew?!
What is a Dump Cake?
It’s simply dumping all of your ingredients into your pan and baking it. More detailed version for a cake made with fruit: Pour your fresh fruit or canned fruit filling into a pan, pour your cake mix over the fruit to cover, then add thin slices of butter to cover the entire pan (this will help give it that crispy, cobbler-ish topping), then bake. So whether it be for an Ice Cream Social, gathering, or potluck...*pause* Are we still doing those after the panoramic? Asking for a friend.
My Mom blessed me with a Dump Cake cookbook a few Christmases before her transition, and I couldn’t wait to use it. The day I decided to make one, I still had not found the cookbook my Mom gifted me (here is one similar). I knew it was tucked away downstairs in a bin from our move…and that I would eventually find it. So what did I do? I decided to make it anyway. Thanks to my two lb. order of strawberries from Whole Foods, all I needed was a box of cake mix (which I already had), sugar, and butter, of course. Listen—it’s just that easy.
What You Will Need to Make a Strawberry Butter Golden Dump Cake
- 9 x 13 Baking Dish
- Cooking spray or Extra Butter
- One box of cake mix
- 5 Cups of Fresh Strawberries
- 1 to 1.5 sticks of unsalted butter (salted works too, if that’s all you have)
- Sugar or Stevia
- Optional: You can use one can of strawberry pie filling + 1.5 cups of fresh, sliced strawberries instead of all fresh strawberries.
How Many Varieties of Dump Cakes are there?
Let’s see…
Dump Cakes can be made with a variety of fruit fillings, cake flavors, mix-ins (chocolate chips, pudding mix, nuts, etc.), you name it! Most people use canned fruit fillings like the kind you find on the baking aisle. Cherry, blueberry, apple, strawberry, peach, etc. Before I knew what they were called, I do believe I had a raspberry cake at one point.
MY FIRST DUMP CAKE
Dump cakes are so much fun to make. For instance, I made my first Dump Cake for Valentine’s Day weekend and it just so happened to be a Chocolate Dump Cake. I shared it on Instagram, and let’s just say, may not be the best name for it. *snickers* It was absolutely AMAZING, by the way! Also, you check out the third Dump Cake that actually documented, my Cherry Strawberry Dump Cake recipe found here!
Most Dump Cakes are made with canned filling. I made my cake with fresh, sliced strawberries mixed with sugar. You can also use stevia. How does it taste? Divine! It definitely gives me cobbler vibes. The crust topping has a buttery flavor with the perfect texture. It’s best served warm with homestyle vanilla ice cream.
FRESH BERRIES VS. CANNED FILLING
This Strawberry Butter Golden Dump Cake is perfect for summer and an easy recipe to prepare to take to the family BBQ or cookout! You know the holidays are around the corner too. *hint hint* Let’s be honest, you can enjoy this delicious recipe all year long, and you don’t need a special occasion to enjoy it.

Strawberry Butter Golden Dump Cake
Ingredients
- 1 Box Butter Golden Cake Mix
- 5 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
- 1/4 cup sugar or to taste or Stevia
- 1 stick butter, unsalted divided
- 1 can strawberry pie filling, optional You can use one can of strawberry pie filling + 1.5 cups of fresh, sliced strawberries instead of all fresh strawberries.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 ℉ degrees.
- Spray baking dish with cooking spray or grease dish with butter.
- In a bowl, mix sliced strawberries with 1/4 cup of sugar.
- Pour sliced strawberries in the bottom of baking dish.
- Sprinkle the entire box of cake mix to completely cover the sliced strawberries — evenly.
- For a 9 x 13: Slice unsalted butter into approximately 20-24 thinly sliced squares to evenly distribute over the cake. The butter will create a delicious, buttery crust for your topping as it melts. See example above.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes or until your topping is golden brown and your filling is bubbling. You can use a fork to test if your "crust" is ready. Get ready to grab your ice cream.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Use a smaller baking dish if you want your cake thicker (ex. 9 x 9 or 10 x 10 dish). Also when baking, oven times may vary anywhere between 45 to 60 minutes bake time.
- If you make this recipe using canned strawberry filling, use two (2), 21 ounce cans and eliminate the sugar.
