Growing up, our next-door neighbor, Mrs. Marie had a peach tree and its branches extended beyond a silver fence. This is also the tree that occasionally left the sweetest gifts in our yard. Understand that those were some of the best peaches, and my Mom made some of the best pies from those peaches. In Alabama, most of our peaches come from Chilton County, and they are absolutely delicious! I’m even inclined to believe that they are better than Georgia’s peaches. Don’t debate me.
For Labor Day, HB was supposed to make a dessert. Unfortunately, he was so busy on the grill that he forgot to make it. *insert drama series music* Also, he didn’t tell me. I actually thought the dessert was already made. Because everyone thinks that I’m the Dessert Queen, so I had to think fast.
A Peach Pie – Full of Fresh Peaches
We were blessed with Blessing Boxes filled with summer peaches and I could not, in good faith, allow those peaches to go bad. Peach Pie it is! This is not just any peach pie. Additionally, it must be filled with fresh, southern sweet peaches, a hint of bourbon, and wrapped with LOVE in a delectable, flaky crust!
Ingredients and Tips for Southern Peach Pie
- Dough/Crust: (Two) 16-ounce packages of pastry dough (ready to bake – for filling-crust and top crust) OR (1) 9- inch pie (frozen) crust read-to-bake + (1) 16-ounce package of pastry dough (for the top crust).
- Peaches: fresh peaches are always best, but if peaches are not in season, canned will work fine.
- Lemon juice: enhances the flavor and gives balance to fruit filling.
- Egg wash: optional but encouraged. This will help seal your crust once you pour in your filling and also gives a nice golden brown color and texture to the topping of your pie.
- Butter: You will cut your butter into pieces to distribute on top of your pie before adding the top dough for your top crust.
- All-purpose flour
- White sugar
- Ground nutmeg
- Ground cinnamon
- Salt
- Bourbon – this is totally optional!
The Southern Peach Pie turned out exceptionally amazing, especially since it was made at the last minute. Did I mention this this particular time it was my first time making a peach pie from scratch! I made it several times after the initial time, Don’t worry, it’s super easy to make and nothing over the top.

The Crust – You Have Options!
You can make a homemade top crust and pie (shell) or you can keep it simple and buy pre-made dough to make it. Just make sure you have your pie (shell) AND dough for the crust top. Most grocery stores carry pre-made/refrigerated pie crusts, and even Pillsbury makes them now. They are my favorite (right now)! Simple and easy. You can also use a pie crust that’s ready to bake out of the freezer section. If you do this, make sure you grab one of the Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts (for the top). Trust me! Follow the directions and you have yourself a delicious homestyle Southern Peach Pie!

Southern Peach Pie
Ingredients
- 2 16 ounce pastry dough with comparable dish OR 1 x – 9 inch pie (frozen) crust read-to-bake + 16 oz of pastry dough (for top crust)
- 1 large egg to make egg wash use this to brush crust for a golden brown color (top and seal the filling)
- 4 to 5 cups fresh peaches, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter (cut into pieces)
- 1/8 cup bourbon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
- Brush 9 inch pie crust with egg wash. (Note: this keeps the filling from making your bottom soggy).
- Place sliced peaches in a large mixing bowl. Add 1/8 cup of Bourbon (optional), then drizzle lemon juice. Toss gently.
- Mix sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt in a separate mixing bowl.
- Next, pour flour mixture over peaches. Toss gently to get the peaches well coated.
- Pour peaches mixture into pie crust.
- Distribute cut pieces of butter evenly on top of pie filling.
- Cover entire top with (other) pie dough.
- Fold the crust edges under. Flute the edges to seal (you can watch a tutorial here). Use a fork to make imprints along the edge of the pie crust. It's also helpful to dip your fork in egg wash with each impression. Use can use water as well.
- Cut about 5 slits on top of the crust for venting. Brush top of pie crust with remaining egg wash.
- Bake on 425 for about 10 minutes then reduce to 350 degrees. Use the foil method to avoid burning your pie crust edges. See notes.
- Bake for approximately 25 to 30 minutes or until you have a golden brown crust.
- Allow the pie to cool 1 to 2 hours before serving.
- Serve and enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
Notes
- If you have peaches (mixture) left over, you can use it as a topping over ice cream.
- Here are four ways to flute pie crusts.
- How to keep pie crust from burning. About halfway through, you can remove the foil off of crust.
- You can adjust your spices to your liking. I love them!
