Metro Diner: Take TWO!

I can’t tell you guys how excited I am to share about my experience to one of Birmingham’s newest additions! Wait for the surprise near the end of this post! I remember hearing about a new diner coming to Alabama from some people from Tuscaloosa, only to find out we were getting one here. Yay! It’s called Metro Diner and it’s a place “Where the Locals Eat!” That’s me! Guess what else? They serve breakfast ALL day long! You may also remember seeing them on Food Network’s: Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives! You can check out the clips here. I just have to share one thing…YO HALA ON THE SQUARE!

During the week of Birmingham’s own Restaurant Week, I had the pleasure of trying it out for myself! Of course prior to my dining experience, I had to check out their menu. At first glance, I knew it would be a place that would feel like home — made with love like food served straight from Mama’s kitchen!

I was right.

Now let’s talk about the menu item that brought music to my ears! It was the deliciousness that is their Fried Chicken and Waffles — but wait for it….the waffles are topped with house-made strawberry butter! OMGeeeee…my soul was overjoyed! I love that the portion sizes are very generous, which means there is plenty to share. Sharing is caring!

Here is a breakdown (in more detail) of the menu items we ordered:

Fried Chicken and Waffles with House-made Strawberry Butter

Half a fried chicken and a Belgian waffle topped with a sweet, strawberry butter and served with a signature sweet and spicy sauce.

Charleston Shrimp & Grits

Two fried grit cakes infused with cheese, roasted red peppers and Andouille sausage. Topped with shrimp, sausage, onions and peppers in a shrimp sauce. Garnished with chopped bacon and green onions.

Y’all! Sorry, the grit cakes brought the southern out of me. They were everything! At first I was a little skeptical. Like…who turns grits into a cake!? Ummm…Metro Diner, that’s who! And they are AMAZING!

*ENTERS FALL…*

What I love about Metro Diner is that they have weekly specials. Some of those may include seasonal menu items. Being that it is fall and all, I got to enjoy some pretty amazing new additions!

Apple Yo Hala (A seasonal twist to the traditional Yo Hala on the Square)

Apple Yo Hala…YES, PLEASE! I’m talkin’ thick slices of challah bread stuffed with cream cheese filling with a mix of apples, cinnamon, and hazelnut syrup. It’s prepared just like French toast, and it’s topped with apple compote. (Note: I added fresh strawberries and blueberries on the side) **NEWSFLASH** it was absolutely delicious!

Just wait until you see what the HB ordered! 

Pumpkin Cheesecake Stuffed Waffle

I’m not even kidding, when I saw our server bring out HB’s Pumpkin Cheesecake Stuffed Waffle, I was a tad bit jelly! I only had a small bite, but this waffle was amazing! I think the name alone is the perfect description. Pumpkin spice fans, make sure you try this if it’s available on the weekly/daily special menu. And even if you’re not a fan of pumpkin…TRUST ME… you will want to try this waffle! It will change your life!

Huevos Rancheros

The Huevos Rancheros will be perfect for breakfast lunch or dinner! It includes your choice of eggs served over fried tortilla shells, chorizo sausage, black beans, onions and peppers. Topped with melted cheese, salsa, sour cream, jalapeños and green onions. Mmmmm!

A few other menu items for my traditionalists:

Two Egg Breakfast with Ham (someone wanted to order fries) – not naming any names.

Chicken Pot Pie

If you look in the right corner of the second photo with the shrimp and grits, and squint a little, you’ll see it, lol:  One of our guests ordered the Chicken Pot Pie, and of course I had to get a taste! It’s loaded with fresh baked chicken, lima beans, corn, carrots, peas and French cut green beans. Topped with a homemade biscuit crust.

But wait…did you read that? BISCUIT CRUST! *SWOONS* You can also get the pot pie in regular or jumbo size.

I think you already know how I feel about this place, and I’m beyond excited to have Metro Diner in our city. You can tell everything is made with love, and I love that it’s a place “where the locals eat!”

EXCITING news! Not only do we have one location, but NOW we have two! That’s right, Birmingham and surrounding areas peeps, we have two locations to choose from. Update! (4/30/2019) The Vestavia location is now CLOSED, but you can visit Inverness and the NEW Trussville location!
