For the first time in 3.5 years I hit the trail. It felt so surreal. It also felt good to be back at the place where I trained for all of my half and full marathons. I got in over 3+ miles and did my first Peloton outdoor class with Selena Samuela! I really enjoyed her class. I’ll share more about Peloton outdoor classes later.
Over the years, seeing posts and post-run snapshots of my running family (Run Fam) gave me the case of the FOMOs. It made me REALLY miss being on the pavement that much more! Returning to group runs and running with friends (especially with my running bestie, Leticia) has been big on my heart for a minute.
Then I stumbled upon this sign on the path… “Run Together”. It confirmed everything that has been in my heart. There’s something about the running/walking community that fuels me. We are like no other. You don’t feel alone. As soon as I build back up, I know that I will get to share the pavement with my Run Fam — and I can’t wait!
When I was finishing up my miles, the humid wind hit my face. As I circulated the lot to ensure that I had the miles prescribed, I felt a tinge of nostalgia. Then it hit me out of nowhere…I could smell the sweet scent of my Mother. CLEAR. AS. DAY. I know it may sound eerie to some, but it was very REAL and very brief. I’m actually reading a book called “The Gift” by Echo Bodine and she talks about this. It’s the gift of clairgustance. You can smell things that aren’t physically present. In the book she says, “The most common way that clairgustance manifests itself is when a deceased loved one comes to visit us. The person will project a smell to us (by thinking about it), such as the cologne the person used to wear, or something that will immediately bring a thought of a loved one to mind.” You get the point. That was such a sweet reminder that I was on the right path.
So now I want to say thank you to Christi, Lynsey, Courtney, Indi, Natalie, Princess Leigh, Jennifer, Olivia, Serena, Tammy, and Temeka, and so many others…for helping me keep that fire burning! I see you! You all know my story, and I know you all have one too. It’s been tough getting back to where I was, but my Mama didn’t raise no QUITTER!
Just consider this my REBIRTH.
