Back in June, a fellow local foodie and attended a Restaurant Takeover event here in Birmingham with Eugene’s Hot Chicken and Pixie Ice Cream Company. The chicken was amazing and the taste was like no other. Then I started hearing more people talk about it so I knew it must be a thing. After the event, several people asked me, “What exactly is hot chicken?” All I could tell them was hot chicken originated in Nashville and is comprised of three components: white bread (“light bread” if you are from the south), fried chicken, and pickle chips. That just sounds finger-licking good! So, of course I wanted to learn more about it.
What is Hot Chicken?
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of hot chicken:
Hot chicken or Nashville hot chicken is a type of fried chicken that is a specialty of Nashville, Tennessee. It is usually prepared with a portion of breast, thigh, or wing that has been marinated in a water-based blend of seasoning, floured, fried, and sauced using a paste packed with powerful spices. Can we say…Hot! Hot! Hot! It is served on top of slices of white bread with pickle chips. The spicy paste and presentation puts it in a league of its own. This is not your typical Buffalo style chicken and there really is no comparison.
Eugene’s Hot Chicken
Eugene’s Hot Chicken, like most hot chicken, is made fresh to order which is another reason why I love it! If you are local and want to try it for yourself, make sure you follow Eugene’s Hot Chicken on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to find out where they will pop-up next! I know one thing…I will have my face in the place!
I’m looking forward to more restaurants coming to Birmingham serving up mouth-watering hot chicken in 2016! Eat local!
