With a new year comes a new perspective. Last year I declared 2016 to be the year of non-scale victories, and in 2017 I plan to take the same approach. I truly believe it all starts with the heart and mind…and the body will follow. Trying not to become obsessed with weightloss, I decided to find ways to celebrate small victories one healthy habit at a time.
Here are a few healthy habits to help you (and me) be GREAT and successful in 2017:
Sleep/Rest: It’s so important to get adequate sleep each night. It’s essential to our well-being and overall health. It is recommended that we get 6 to 8 hours of sleep daily, because lack of sleep can affect our day-to-day functioning, balance of hormones, appetite (which could cause weight gain), and our immune system. And besides, no one wants to be around a “Crabby Patty” who is grumpy due to lack of adequate sleep.
Prayer/Meditation: This practice will help center your mind, body, and spirit. It creates an atmosphere for positive energy that will lead to a productive day.
Drink Water: While we are asleep, our metabolism slows down and our body is slightly dehydrated—which is why drinking eight ounces of water before your feet hit the floor every morning is always a great idea. Helpful Hint: at night before bed, place a bottle of water on your nightstand, and wake up and refresh your mind and body with some good H20.
Exercise: It doesn’t have to be rigorous exercises, a simple 30-minute walk is a great healthy habit to incorporate into your day. Get “brisky wit it” if you really feel like revving up that calorie burn. If you exercise early in the day, endorphins will release and positive vibes will flow helping you to remain positive throughout the day.
Eat Breakfast: We’ve heard one million times that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well…it’s true. It’s best to go for a protein-packed, fiber rich breakfast that will keep you full until lunch (with a snack in between). Ingredients

- 12-14 ounces of coconut almond milk blend
- 2 handfuls of spinach
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 tbsp of cacao powder
- 3 tbsps of flaxseeds
- 6-8 mint leaves (or more) to taste
