If you read my last post about this cool new spot in Birmingham, then you know that I stumbled upon a NEW (to me) hot dog spot in the Avondale neighborhood also in Birmingham called, Hot Diggity Dogs. They are the home of some pretty dope hot dogs, vegetarian dogs, cold brew, and if I keep telling you the rest, I’ll ruin the element of surprise.
First off, the sweet smell of onions will catch you right as you walk through the door. If I didn’t see the name of this place, I would have assumed it was a hot dog joint. Yes, my foodie senses are pretty spot on. After our blogger meet-up, I knew I couldn’t just walk in this place and NOT at the least order a hot dog TO-GO.
What caught my eye was a menu item called the “Winky Dink Dog”. If you know me, then you know I’m a HUGE fan of the 1980’s movie Hollywood Shuffle. There’s one scene in particular where the owner is talking to Bobby Taylor (played by Robert Townsend) about their place of employment, “Winky Dinky Dogs”. This scene is absolutely HILARIOUS and one of my favorites in the movie.
You know I had to do it! I ordered the “Winky Dink Dog”! It came with mustard, onion, and pimento cheese—and y’all know I love pimento cheese. Well, would you believe that this creamy deliciousness got scarfed down by someone (not naming any names)? Needless to say, I didn’t get to take a photo. Womp! Yep! It was THAT good.
All of their hot dogs are either 100% Kosher Beef or Tofu — AND you can build your own hot dogs. Oh, goodness, I can’t forget their buns! I don’t know how they prepare them, but they are pretty magical. Swoons! As you see, they have some uniquely, yumtastic menu items.
Here are some others:
Novelties: Fries, Tots, Pork Skins
Salads: Falafel Salad (I can’t wait to try it!)
Soups: Vegan Chili, Meat Chili, Soup of the Day
Thrills: Poutine, Chili Cheese Fries, Pork Skin Nachos (OMGeee!), Soup of the Day
Top: The Motherload (Chili, Mustard, Onion, Kraut, Slaw) – This dog is like your traditional chili dog with a little “bad and boujee” edge.
Bottom: The Sayonara (Sriracha, Surimi Salad, Pickled Ginger, Seaweed Relish) – This dog has an Asian flair, and it almost makes you feel like you’re eating a “sushi” dog. I will recommend trying this ONLY if you are a true G. It’s very unique, but it’s SO GOOD!
Pork Skin Nachos loaded with queso, jalapeno peppers, and ground beef. Somebody get the Food Network on the line!
Cheese Fries…awesome! I heard they put Chachere’s on their fries. I’m going to have to find out if this is true.
Everything was delicious, but I will have to say the Pork Skin Nachos were my favorite. If you order them, make sure you dine in because they do not travel well. Your crunchy textured “nachos” will become Sog-No-Mon. Although, I did order them to-go, I managed to sift out quite a few “nachos” that maintained their crunch. So good! I ordered their vegan Curried Collard Green Soup of the Day to take for lunch the next day, and it was also delicious!
I have seen everything from Gyro Fries and limited specials like their Jerk-Brined Chicken Thigh Sandwich come across their IG feed, so make sure you check out their specials. Hot Diggity Dogs has bar-style seating, and for you late night munchers, they DO stay open late!
They are located in Avondale above Fancy’s on 5th. You can check out their website here. You can find Hot Diggity Dogs on Facebook and Instagram to stay up-to-date!
Have you tried them yet?
