You have probably heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” I do believe that what we put into our bodies will determine how we feel from day to day. I can honestly tell a difference when I eat more home-cooked meals, cut out fast-food, eat more veggies, and the list can go on. Eating a healthy diets just makes you feel better from the inside out.
You probably remember the food pyramid back in the day and now we have MyPlate. They both show us a guideline for healthy eating. Well guess what? For 30 years we have received recommendations from U.S. government, by way of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA); but did you know that over the past 30 years, adult obesity has doubled and it is projected to rise up to 50 percent by 2030? We will receive a new set of guidelines in 2015, but unfortunately not much will change.
JAMA released a report estimating at least 50% of Americans today are pre-diabetic or have diabetes. This is why we need the U.S. Government to change the dietary guidelines. I want to get it right. I want US to get it right, but we can’t do it alone. Do you want to help? Sign a petition to demand that quality science will determine the U.S. Dietary Guidelines.
I’ve heard for years how low-carb diets are beneficial to our health. You want to know what I love? Carbs! During my training season, I am encouraged to eat more carbs (or carb load) before high mileage and race day. I also know I don’t need to eat a whole box of doughnuts to get the proper fuel I need. I have learned to embrace a low-carb diet. Don’t get me wrong, low-carb doesn’t mean NO carb! There are ways to enjoy a low-carb diet simply by making healthy swaps. Instead of having a pizza delivered, you can always make your own and use low-carb pita bread or a low-carb pizza crust. This also encourages more home-cooked meals and trying out new recipes! I have quite a few favorite healthy, low-carb go-to recipes.
Baked Parsnip Chips are a great alternative to potato chips and they are healthy, too! They are the perfect low-carb snack that satisfies chip cravings simply by making a healthy swap.
Another favorite is “Crack Slaw”. It’s low-carb and packed with protein. By bulking up on veggies you are able to enjoy a healthy meal without all of the carbs. Again…carbs are not bad, we just need to fuel our bodies with the right carbs. It’s all about mind over matter—but one thing is for sure…Nutrition Matters!
