It has been a while since I shared about the deliciousness that is Birmingham Eat! Last year, you may recall, l attended a Pop-Up Event (here in the Magic City) where I was first introduced to the Nashville favorite, Hot Chicken. You can read about my hot chicken experience here. You may also remember when I shared about a new restaurant coming to Birmingham serving up blazing hot chicken. Well…it’s HERE!
I had the opportunity to try Hattie B’s Hot Chicken for the first time, and let’s just say…it was a cool experience! For those who didn’t know…hot chicken is typically served atop white bread (“light bread” if you’re from the dirty south) with pickle chips.
OK…let’s get to the heat levels:
Southern (No Heat)
Mild or Medium (Touch of Burn)
Hot! (Feel the Heat)
Damn Hot (Fire Starter)
Shut the Cluck Up!!! (Burn Notice) <<<< Nobody wants those problems!
I settled on the Small White Plate (Breast & Wing) Heat Level – Hot, side of fries, and pimento mac & cheese. I wanted to like the mac & cheese more, but it was too runny. Like grits…I prefer mac & cheese a thicker consistency. Next time I’ll let it cool a bit (to thicken) before going IN. However, the mac wasn’t bad at all. I also wanted to try the cobbler, but I said I’d wait. Well, at least my belly did. Cobbler, I’m coming for you!

I do love that they serve waffles on Sunday. The HB ordered Chicken & Waffles (served with a mini cup of fruit for topping). He thought he would be bold and try Damn Hot (heat level). I think it was too hot for him although he probably would never admit it. We both refused to try Shut the Cluck Up (THE highest heat level). Can you blame us? Again…I didn’t want those problems. And yes, I love spicy food! HB ordered a side of fries and bacon cheese grits (only served on Sunday). The grits = Yummmmmtastic!
Overall, we had a great experience! I do plan on trying the Hot Chicken Sandwich next time. On Sundays, I recommend getting there early unless you want to wait in line for at least 30 minutes. Yikes! Not sure about the rest of the week. When it comes to good food…the word spreads fast! It’s a pretty laid back atmosphere. I do wish there was more seating inside, but the outside dining area is perfect for spring/summer! You can check out Hattie B’s full menu here.
I think Hattie B’s is a wonderful addition to our city. It’s nice to have two options when my taste buds are craving hot chicken!
Have you tried Hattie B’s? If so, what is your favorite menu item?
