Remembering Way Back When
When I was younger, I used to look forward to those BIG popcorn tins during the holiday season, and I loved when the holidays came around so I could dive into all three flavors. The popcorn tins we used to get always came with Butter, Caramel, and Cheddar Popcorn.
I also like to grab popcorn after Christmas because 1) tradition, and 2) we love a good markdown. Oh, and those Danish Butter cookies, too, because they are everything and I’ll need those empty tins for storage. iykyk!
We always ended up with popcorn tins both upstairs and downstairs. Last year I forgot to pick up a few tins and I remembered I had a plethora of popcorn stocked as well as white and semi-sweet chocolate chips. So I said, why don’t I just make my own?
Gourmet-style Popcorn at Home
Making your own gourmet-style popcorn at home is super simple! All you need is premium baking semi-sweet chocolate and white chocolate chips, crushed peppermint or candy canes pieces — and festive sprinkles for a little razzle-dazzle! Simple as that. So when you forget to pick up a tin of your favorite holiday assortment of popcorn, you can make your own and it will be just as amazing!
I am excited to make this popcorn again, but perhaps a different variation. That’s the beauty of it. It’s so fun to make and the popcorn can go in little goodie bags. You can even make your own assortment of popcorn and fill it with your favorite popcorn flavors.
Ingredients for Double Chocolate Peppermint Popcorn
- Plain Popcorn
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- White Chocolate Premium Baking Chips
- Peppermint Extract
- Crushed Peppermint
- Sprinkles (optional)
Tips & Revisions
- The sprinkles are totally optional, but they do add a fun holiday element to the mix.
- Feel free to use vanilla and chocolate almond bark in place of white and semi-sweet chocolate. Both work well!
- Plain popcorn works great, but if you’re going for more of a sweet & salty combo, you can use a lightly salted popcorn brand of choice.
- You can use both crushed peppermint or candy cane pieces.
- Feel free to use all chocolate or all white chocolate. I used mostly white chocolate this go-round (in the photos), but I’ve made it both ways! So good!
- If you have other mix-ins (such as M&M’s, pretzels, etc.), add them in!
Storage
- Transfer any leftover popcorn to a large air-tight container or storage bag (remove excess air).
- Store popcorn in a cool dry place and away from sunlight and heat to avoid melting chocolate.
- Best enjoyed 3 to 5 days.
