It’s no secret that my HBCU-Love runs deep. For those who didn’t know, HBCU stands for Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Both my parents were graduates of HBCUs. My Mother was a graduate of Alabama State University and both my Mother and Father were graduates of Daniel Payne College. I’ve been immersed in HBCU culture since I was a toddler, and my love has only grown deeper over the years. When I met HB, I knew it was meant to be. Pretty much everyone in his family attended an HBCU, but most of them attended Alabama State University. Go Hornets!
The History of HBCUs:
“The first HBCUs were founded in Pennsylvania and Ohio before the American Civil War (1861–1865) with the purpose of providing black youths—who were largely prevented, due to racial discrimination, from attending established [white] colleges and universities—with a basic education and training to become teachers or tradesmen…
Following the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, HBCUs were founded throughout the South with support from the Freedmen’s Bureau, a federal organization that operated during Reconstruction to help former slaves adjust to freedom. Such institutions as Atlanta University (1865; now Clark Atlanta University), Howard University, and Morehouse College (1867; originally the Augusta Institute) provided a liberal arts education and trained students for careers as teachers or ministers and missionaries, while others focused on preparing students for industrial or agricultural occupations.” You can read more here.
I remember when it came down to me picking colleges, Clark Atlanta University and Hampton University were in my top five. Unfortunately, when you have to pick between scholarships or out-of-state fees, I’m sure you can guess which one won. Please know, I have no regrets with my college of choice. I met some of the most amazing people on my journey to becoming a Blazer—but you better believe, I will always Support HBCUs!
